CAPTAIN COOK MOTOR LODGE is just 80m from Gisborne's central city beach, Waikanae. Waikanae Beach forms the northern end of the wide sandy sweep of Poverty Bay, the coastal inlet where Captain Cook made his first New Zealand landfall in 1769.
Waikanae Beach is patrolled by lifeguards all summer and is usually sheltered from big waves. It is the ideal, safe beach for children to play and swim and is a great place to learn to surf. It is also a magnificent beach for long walks along the sand to Midway Beach and beyond ... and the sunsets over the bay have to be seen to be believed.
Captain Cook Motor Lodge is just a few blocks from the city centre and a similar distance to the cafés and bars on Gisborne's inner harbour.
